SMBC Coaching Staff
Brad Lyans
15-1 Head Coach
Brad Lyans is one of the rising stars of the SMBC coaching ranks and returns again to
helm the 15-1’s, which with its own separate division (the 15’s) in the SCVA is no longer a
team bridging the gap to the next age level, but an elite competitive force.
Brad knows volleyball: a two-sport high school athlete, he found his calling as a celebrated
player for the 1999 State runner-up Pierce College Men’s team, earning All-League honors
in the process. Brad is equally adept on the sideline, having coached several successful
seasons of club volleyball and high school volleyball before joining the collegiate coaching
ranks at his alma mater, where as an assistant for the Men’s Team he won back-to-back
State Championships. He now assists both the men’s and women’s programs at Pierce, the
latter under SMBC 18-1 coach Nabil Mardini. Brad is a fixture on the college summer
camp and elite Gold Medal Squared Coaching Clinic circuits and works tirelessly to
improve himself, and his players receive the benefits of his labor.
Under Brad’s guidance the 2007 15-1’s capped the year in dramatic fashion with a second
place finish at the Volleyball Festival in Reno. Their phenomenal run to the finals included
wins over other powerhouse SCVA teams and some northern California competitors. They
spent the majority of the year in the SCVA 15’s Division One and will remain a stalwart there for many seasons to come. Brad returns in 2008 for his third season as head coach of
the 15-1’s. EMAIL BRAD
Jeff Porter
18-2 Head Coach
Heading into his ninth season with SMBC, Jeff is one of the club’s most experienced
coaches. As the Head Girl’s Volleyball Coach at Brentwood School since 1978, Jeff has
guided the Eagles to seven CIF Titles and two California State Championships while his
players have earned league, region and state accolades (not to mention collegiate
scholarships) many times over.
Jeff has been involved with volleyball at the Junior Club level for 21 years; he captured his
first 14’s title at the 1988 Volleyball Festival and his teams also have finished 2nd at both
the Festival and at the Junior Olympics. The former director of the Club West Juniors team
program, Jeff still conducts the Club West Sports summer camp program.
Jeff returns to coach some of our oldest and most talented players as coach of the 18-2’s
following a pair of highly successful years guiding that same squad.EMAIL JEFF
Valerie Pryor
16-1 Assistant Coach
Valerie Pryor returns for her second season within the SMBC coaching ranks after a year as the assistant of the powerful 16-1’s. She rejoined SMBC in 2007 after a five-year break that saw her excel across multiple platforms: she was a star player for Nabil Mardini and the Pierce College Women’s Team, a Pierce College women’s assistant coach, and a professional beach volleyball player. Val is currently the Head Girl’s Varsity Volleyball Coach for the LA Baptist High School, as well as the school’s Assistant Athletic Director. She returns to the 16-1’s in 2008 as assistant coach. .EMAIL VALERIE
